Sickie Baby today

Poor Puddins! He had a hard time falling asleep last night but I thought it was because i was home and he missed me (I really did think that). This morning he woke up around 520am. I let him talk and play a bit and I went and got him around 6am. He was starting to fall asleep again but once he seen me he perked back up. He drank most of his bottle and I was ready to put him down on the floor so he could play with his toys (normal routine) and he layed his head down on my chest and I rocked him for a while. I had to go potty so I laid him back in his crib around 630am and he slept until a bit after 9am. He woke up and I tried to feed him his cereal and fruit ( I didnt know he was sick yet) and after a few spoonfuls he refused. I gave him a bottle, he drank most of it, and we played for about an hour. At 11am I laid him back down and as I kissed his forehead i felt he was a bit warm. At 230pm I walked into his room and he was just waking up. I felt him and he was WARM! I took his temp (rectally...He didnt like that at all) and it hit 103 pretty quickly. So I called the pedi, explained what was going on and we had an app. for 430pm.
We picked Jonathan up from karate at 4pm and headed to the pedi. they seen us fairly quickly, which made all of us happy. Dr. Toth checked the right ear....all clear! He checked the left ear...UH OH! Ear Infection. He sees redness and puss! EWWWWW. My poor little man has been not feeling well at all but he has been a trooper. He definitly take after his big brother!
I had taken his temp. at 230 and it was 103. I gave him tylenol.....the pedi. took his temp at 430pm....102.2. dr . tells me to keep giving him tylenol for the fever and give him one dose of amoxicillin today and 2x a day from tomorrow on (for the next 9 days) .
I took him temp. around 8pm.....103.2. Gave him tylenol...took him temp at 930pm....102.7 (all the temps since the one rectal this morning have been from armpit). Called the dr. I was freaking myself out. Of course, the ear infection is in the ear that he has some residual hearing from. All I could think of was the infection spreading, becoming much worse , etc. and him lose the little hearing he has from that ear. I was looking online and that didnt help either. Dr. Toth called back pretty quickly and he did calm me down and through our conversation I found that I was undermedicating Thomas. the guy at cvs told me .8.....that is half what Thomas should be getting. Dr. said that .8 is OK for a 4mth old....not for an 11mth old. thanks CVS for making my son suffer needlessly for most of today. Jim got home from the gym and I ran up to the drugstore and bought infants motrin. came home, woke Thomas up...gave him his dose, he drank some milk and he was ready to play. Oh No....its 1130pm. so we rocked for a bit and than I laid him down in his crib. I hear him talking and making noises from the monitor.....hopefully the motrin will work and he will feel better tomorrow.
I dont know about him but I am sure tired. Worrying really tires a Mommy out. You cant imagine what was running through my head tonite. Sometimes the internet is a double edged sword.
I think tomorrow we are going to keep it slow. I am planning on staying home and doing what Thomas wants to do. Hopefully with another dose of amox. and some rest he will be feeling better!

btw....windsor stunk!!!! The redid the whole thing.....the deco. was cool but they got rid of the cafeteria and most of my fave slots (blazin 7's). there is no way I am going to get a passport just to go back up there. I can live without gambling....definitly live without losing money!
I was only gone for a day (left sunday and came back monday). Jonathan stayed home from school monday. He told Jim he wasnt feeling well. When I got home Jonathan handed me a letter saying
"after dad gave me some medicine i felt better but i didnt want to go to school, i wanted to be here when you go home" THATS MY BOY! I missed them, too! But I did have a good time goofing around with my family. Next time we all go somewhere it will have to be somewhere where we can all do different things!

Growing by leaps and bounds

I cant believe how big Thomas is getting. I remember that little boy I brought home from the hospital almsot a year ago. Now he is a VERY active baby who doesnt like to sit still for longer than a minute.
He doesnt respond to anything without his hearing aids in. BUT, with the aids in (especially the left one) he definitly hears us. Probably not enough to distinguish exactly what we are saying (explain that to the psychologist...lol) but he hears us.
He DEFINITLY hears me when he is crawling towards the bathroom door (when someone leaves it open) and I say "Thomas....NO" he stops, turns to look at me, and usually keeps on crawling into the bathroom! Same thing with going into the cabinet when I forget to put the baby lock on it (there are only so many times I can put my frying pans back in order) and when he throwing the dvd's around like confetti on new years eve! That is Daddy's favorite thing that puddins does. Throwing his movies all over the living room! Daddy loves it! One of Jonathan's special things is when he is playing a video game or having a snack in the living room. No matter what Thomas is doing he immediately stop and rapidly crawls over to Jonathan to "help" him with whatever he is doing.
Thomas is so expressive with his emotions. I love the faces he makes. He is quite the imitator , too! Its really funny to see this little boy try to imitate what we do. His new thing now is to do the shoulder shrug and roll his eyes at us. Like he cant be bothered with what we are doing or saying.
Big Brother is doing well! Jonathan is such a big help and excellent big brother although he does get irritated when Thomas wants to do big boy things! Jonathan is getting all A's in school and socially he is excelling! I am so proud of him!!!!!
God has definitly blessed me with my 2 boys.

REFRESHING....

I was at parma hospital last week visiting my Grandpa (say a little prayer for him, please....he broke his hip and has to have surgery).
Thomas and I were waiting for the elevator and a middle aged guy was waiting with us. It was beautiful outside so Thomas didnt have a coat or winter hat on. The guy took a look at Thomas and immediately asked if those were hearing aids in his ears. I said "yes". He said "that is wild, how did you know he couldnt hear?" I explained the short version of the story and he asked if they helped and I told him a bit but he will still be receiving a cochlear implant in april. he gave Thomas all kinds of attention and Thomas loved it!
I titled this blog "refreshing" because it was so great to have someone ask me directly about Thomas. I had been so tired of people staring and giving me the "I am so sorry" look. A few would ask a question but most would just look away. This guy was great. came right out and was just as excited to see Thomas as I always am. He didnt focus on the hearing aids...he did have alot of questions but I was happy to answer them.
Of course, if this had been 8mths ago this would have been an entirely different blog! I was an emotional mess back than (I have gotten better....really I have...lol) and if he would have approached me back than as he did that day I dont know how I would have reacted.
I wanted to thank my friend in the elevator for treating Thomas like a sweet little boy with a bit of a hearing problem....instead of deafness attached to a little boy!

Learning Specialist Evaluation

We had a checklist that had to be completed before Thomas would be considered a candidate for a CI. Everything was done but the learning evaluation with psychology. Thomas had that appointment this past thursday....march 15th at 9am (hello rush. hour traffic...I definitly dont miss those days of driving downtown in the early A.M.).
Dr. T was very nice but the appointment was a bit of a waste of time, in my opinion.

We were asked some of the following questions......
....can Thomas take off his coat/ sweater?
can he pull up his pants (if they are elastic band)
can he work puzzles? open a door using the door knob? can he say "mama, dada, baba?", does he understand simple directions....put this in the garbage! leave kitty alone!
will he put his toys back in the toy box after he is done playing with them. If so, do I have to tell him or does he do it on his own?
WHAT THE HECK?
THan she had him do some physical things.
she put two baby shoes and a spoon in front of him. she picked up one baby shoe and told him to pick up the matching one. HELLO...HE CANT HEAR/UNDERSTAND YOU!!!! He picked up the shoe and the spoon and put them both in his mouth. She handed him a hair brush to see if he would brush his hair....NOPE he put it in his mouth. She handed him a spoon...he put that right in his mouth (and he was a bit ticked that there was nothing on it). She handed him blocks to see if he would stack them. NOPE. He did put them in and out of the box (after I said to him "IN" or "OUT"). After 2 times of doing that he threw them off the table and at the dr.
I am anxious to see what this report will say. I bet he acts like a normal 10mth old! LOL He cant change his own diaper/dress himself or drive himself to the mall so we may have to work on a few things!

Surgery Date Scheduled

At our last appointment with Dr. Megerian we decided to schedule the surgery for April 30th, 2007. We all would have loved to have done it sooner than later but because of the insurance company we have to wait until Thomas is atleast 1yr old.
We had our 1st. appointment with Dr. Gail Murray on Feb 15th. She is an audiologist on the CI team, she will be doing all the mapping after Thomas receives his CI. She was awesome with Thomas and she got some really good results from the behavioral hearing test (sit in a soundbooth and see Thomas' reactions with and without hearing aids). Her results were the same as every other, severe-profound bilaterally. We looked over the CI's for a tiny bit and now its up to us to decide which items we want for Thomas. I think we are gearing more towards the BTE than the BWP.
We than went to visit with Dr. Megerian. He looked Thomas over and said "lets schedule a date"! We have everything on our checklist done except for meeting with Dr. Tangen for a learning evalutaion (she is going to make sure that we have the appropriate therapy for after CI implantation). She is a psychologist who works with Dr. Megerian.
I have also been doing some researching on my own (thanks to google) and I knew I googled this probably 40x when Thomas first got diagnosed (can epidural cause hearing loss) and nothing ever popped up. I googled it the other day and an entire article came up about how some epi. drugs are ototoxic and can cause hearing loss. My presumption is that when a laboring mother receives 3-4 doses or epidural it cant be a good thing. If this is the anesth. fault...I would like to be left in a room alone with him...and I guarantee you he would lose alot more than his hearing.
Thomas is doing well. He is crawling around like a madman! He takes little steps here and there but no walking on his own yet. Now words, of course (I HATE reading monthly updates about what my "10 mth" old should be doing now.) If he could hear he would be saying Mama and dada...but he is NOT! He started drinking from a straw on Wednesday. He looks so cute puckerin his little lips and getting his juice...it surprised him at first but he quickly got the hang of it. Now, its just a waiting game for April 30th. ALthough we do get to celebrate THomas' big day on April 18th. No big plans yet. Hopefully baba will let us have the party at her house...I cant fit all those people in my tiny place.
Jonathan is doing exceptionally well. He received his progress report last week and he is getting Excellents in all subjects. His teacher, Mr. Wolters, said that Jonathan is an amazing student, both socially and educationally. He is such a fantastic kid. I thank God for both of my boys every day. Jonathan started taking Karate at school, every Tuesday. He came home this past Tuesday with his white belt on andhe told me he really liked karate and couldnt wait until next week!
I guess thats it for now.
