2 days into vacation and we have run into two different people who have had crazy reactions to Thomas' processors.
#1) We stopped to eat on our way down to South Carolina (I forgot which state we were in). Thomas was walking along a curb (holding my hand) and he jumped down and one of his processors fell off. As he usually does, he popped it right back into place and kept walking. As we were standing in line a man walked up to me and asked me "what kind of vacuum held the thing on my babies head"? I had no idea what he was talking about so I asked him (politely) to repeat his question. I tried to quickly explain to him that there was no vacuum...only a magnet that was surgically implanted in my son's head that held the coil on. He looked at me like I was insane and walked away.
#2) We visited a flea market yesterday. There were so many people there selling such different things...it was really a great place to people watch, too! We stopped at a bunch of stands ~ one in particular had a very sweet lady working at it. We were browsing through her items and she came up to us and asked "What those? What those on kids head?" My sister in law started to explain that Thomas was born deaf ~ he had surgery a few years ago to get Cochlear implants so he can hear..." in the middle of my sister in laws explanation the lady says "He can't hear? Thats too bad" so we tried explaining again what they were and what they were for ~ we still got "thats too bad for him...I pray"...I thanked her for her prayers and we moved on. I wish she would have given us a bit more time to explain to her that he could hear but she was very busy.
We have two more weeks of vacation ~ I wonder what else we have in store for us

Wow- you have run into some interesting people!
With hearing aids, we sometimes get stares but people usually know what they are. Some people, though, have actually asked us if "those things are implants?" We tell them that they're just plain old hearing aids, but I'm always surprised by how many people have heard of (but never seen) cochlear implants. Still, there must be some increasing awareness, because I've received the question 2x this month!
