Thomas started Pre-K at a mainstream preschool. I debated over this decision most of the summer. A few weeks before school started we finalized plans for Thomas to start Pre-K but still receive itinerant services (what a pain that was...trying to figure it all out and find appropriate appointment times..UGH).
I am happy to say that Thomas is LOVING his preschool. He had made alot of new friends. One of his new friends, Mikey, has the same birthday as Thomas. It was cute...they hit it off on the very first day of school (a 45minute visit).
Thomas' communication had really flourished....his speech sounds are much more clear (although we still have alot of work to do), his conversations have more depth. He goes into detail about things that he didnt before.
I am so happy that we made the decision to go for the mainstream school. Although we did have a few rough days in the beginning. A little boy called Thomas "weird" and didnt want to play with him....it broke my heart and I wanted to punch his Mom~ she just stood there and smiled at me. UGH! The teachers had a conversation with the kids about how people are different (some people have glasses, bumps bruises, and they brought up Thomas' ears, etc). After that no one really asked about "the things on his head".
I also have to work with Thomas about standing up for himself and speaking up, especially if someone is hurting him. Another little kid was upset that Thomas had pumpkin tattoos on his hand so he started rubbing them off. Thomas told me (after school) that it hurt and made him mad...he told him to stop but he wouldnt. I told him he should have told the teacher...he said he didnt want to get him in trouble! UGH!
All in all school is going really well for Thomas (and big brother, too)!
